Last fortnight the University archers travelled to Warwick and practically wrapped up the BUTTS tournament with two legs still to go. With Georgia Perona-Wright winning the ladies section and second and third places in the men's to Ian Hawke and Andy Somers, only a 2nd place is needed in one of the last two rounds for overall victory.
So the team had high hopes but few real expectations in the BUSA championships last weekend. With Loughborough and Edinburgh containing most of the national squad, 3rd place would have been a fight. However personal bests from James Keogh (573) and Ian Hawke (571) were narrowly behind the individual bronze score of 574, and with a welcome return to form from Andy Somers (566) the team score of 2249 was the best that the club has shot for a number of years.Despite shooting so well it was still only good enough for 3rd place, Loughborough winning with 2270 and Edinburgh sneaking 2nd with 2256. On the plus side Oxford's team score was around 2120 - another morale booster before next term's Varsity match.
