To join the club as a beginner, please attend one of our have-a-go sessions and register for a beginner's course. At the end of Michaelmas, once the course is complete, you are then welcome to shoot with us as a normal member of the club and borrow club equipment if necessary.

Please Note:

We regret that we cannot accept beginners at any time other than the start of Michaelmas term. This is because running a beginner's course is a significant time investment for committee members, especially in the context of a Cambridge term, and Lent is busy with competitions and Easter with exams.

If you have missed the beginner's course for this academic year, please register your interest for the coming Michaelmas by emailing the committee.

Any updates to the below information and schedules can be followed by signing up to the mailing list soc-cub by clicking here.

At the start of Michaelmas term, we hold have-a-go sessions at the University of Cambridge Sports Centre. Anyone can turn up to these, even if you've never tried archery before. We provide all the equipment, and enough coaching to get you up and shooting. To cover costs, we charge a £3.00 fee. Please bring the exact amount on the day as our ability to dispense change is limited.

This year's have-a-go session are scheduled as follows:

  • Session 1 — 08:00 - 09:00 Sunday 7th October 2018
  • Session 2 — 09:00 - 10:00 Sunday 7th October 2018
  • Session 3 — 10:00 - 11:00 Sunday 7th October 2018

We recommend that you come and visit our stall at the university's 'freshers' fair' at the start of Michaelmas to register your interest and book a place on one of these courses. If you are unable to do this then please email the committee to request a space in one of the sessions. If you have not done this you are welcome to turn up on the day, but priority will be given to those who have booked so be prepared for it to be busy.

Beginner's Courses

At the end of the have-a-go sessions there will be an opportunity to sign up for one of our beginner's courses. These will take place over the six Sunday mornings after the have-a-go session and contain all the coaching necessary to allow you to shoot safely and independently, as well as introducing you to the wider sport of archery. Again, all the equipment will be provided by the club. If the courses are over-subscribed, as they often are, selection will be on a random basis.

The fees for this year's beginner's courses are as follows:

  • Cambridge University students - £60
  • Other students and staff - £80

Those who successfully complete the beginner's course, and as a result are then able to shoot independently to a safe standard, will be provided with a certificate. They are then welcome to become a full member of the club for the rest of the year for a fee of £5 and are welcome to shoot at any of the regular club sessions, continuing to borrow club equipment free-of-charge.

Novice Squad

Beginners that are keen on representing the university as part of the novice team may be accepted on to the novice squad. This involves additional coaching each week as well as the opportunity to hire a bow from the club. Members of the novice squad are expected to attend coaching and practise sessions, as well as the weekend competitions throughout the year.

If you are interested in this, please speak to the novice officer at one of the have-a-go sessions. Selection will be made by consideration of performance, attendance, and keenness.

You can find out more here. If you have any more questions, please get in touch with the novice officer.
