Nottingham BUTTS & November E-league
05-12-2017Andrew BrowneIt's been a busy end of term for the archers of CUB, with both the second leg of BUTTS and score submission for the university e-league containing clubs from across the country.
A team of thirteen travelled to Nottingham, and gave a very good performance: Liam got a barebow bronze, Chris got compound bronze, and Nancy came fourth in ladies' recurve, just one point off third place. Our experienced team maintained their position of seventh in the league, and the novices placed a respectable fifth between the two shoots combined, bringing them to fourth overall in the league, so there's still everything to play for when competitions resume in January. In addition, there were some huge improvements in scores from our novices, some almost gaining 100 points on their last shoot! Thanks to Nottingham for hosting a very successful competition!
The e-league results were promising for November as well. Our experienced teams are performing well, with the C team in contention for promotion to division 2, and our novice A and B teams placed second in divisions 1 and 2 respectively, with both maintaining their overall top place! The novice C team showed a huge improvement, and are comfortably in the promotion places from conference. Individually many our archers placed within the top twenty for their gender and bowstyle, all of which bodes well for competitions next term.
First Competition of 2017 - Oxford BUTTS
11-11-2017

We were delighted to be fielding a full team, with some people even on the reserve list. It was also great to see some of our new members for this year out representing the club at our first competition.
Even more exciting is that we came away with a good number of medals. Liam and Andrew took silver and bronze respectively in the barebow category, whilst Chris took gold in the Compound category. Our novices also did fantastically well; despite having been training for less time than the other universities they secured second place as a team, with Cindy and Lin picking up novice ladies gold and bronze, and Zhengao bringing home the novice gent's bronze.
Our thanks to Oxford University Company of Archers for organising the competition and hosting us. We had a great time at the social afterwards before making the trip back home.
Overall, when combined with the other leg, the novice team came in third out of eight, only three points behind Birmingham whilst the seniors were in seventh. We are now looking ahead to the next competition (Nottingham BUTTS) next weekend, whilst focussing on finishing our beginners' course closer to home.
If you are interested in competing for the university team please get in contact with a member of the committee, we are always looking for new competitive archers!
BUTTS Field Champs - 2 Medals and 2 County Records
22-10-2017Andrew Browne
In field archery, the targets are placed around a wooded course, uphill, downhill, sometimes at an angle or with very tricky footing. The first half of the course consisted of unmarked targets, where archers must guess the distance they shoot based on the type of face they are shooting, and the second half after lunch was marked. While this may have seemed easier, it was more challenging as the targets are further away than when unmarked, and there were some very difficultly positioned targets.
With stormy weather threatening, the team was lucky to get away with no rain and only occasional strong winds while shooting, and we came home with two medals, a silver for Andrew and a bronze for Liam, both in the gent's barebow category, and two Cambridgeshire county records for Jack and Andrew in gent's recurve and barebow respectively. Everyone had a great day and came back with all the equipment they arrived with (which is quite the achievement), and we hope that we can attend more competitions like this in the future.
